Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber has confirmed there are “big name” celebrities itching for a part in the new version of his rock musical Jesus Christ Superstar.
The composer is getting ready to launch his latest show, Superstar, which will see himslef and a panel of esteemed judges including Jason Donovan and Melanie C, embark on the search for a musical star to play the role of Jesus.
But in the meantime, Lloyd Webber has admitted that there has been a lot of interest from already-established stars, who would like to secure some of the other parts in the musical.
Referring to rumours that Nicole Scherzinger has been tipped to play Mary Magdalene, the composer said: “There are rumours, quite a few rumours. An awful lot of people want to do it, so it would be quite wrong of me to say who’s going to do it.
“There are some really quite big names, not exactly queuing up, but certainly calling me.”
Lord Lloyd Webber continued: “We’ll have whoever plays Jesus, and probably the roles of Judas and Mary Magdalene will be people who are well-known.”
Auditions have been taking place around the country in the last few weeks to find singers, dancers and actors, who will compete to land the lead role of Jesus in a new tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.
And Andrew said he is open to females auditioning for the role, as well as males.
“We’re really in the end going to cast Jesus Christ Superstar as written, but if girls want to audition for it I always love to hear them, and even if it doesn’t work out there are lots of other roles,” he explained.
Superstar will be on STV and ITV later this year
